Sink or Swim

This is a lesson that I didn't want Bennett to learn too early in life. However, I guess you just can't plan these things.

Bennett and I have been going to aquatherapy at our local hospital. It has been good for both of us - the pool is small and very warm and I have a much easier time doing some of his therapy. One of the activities is balancing Bennett on a floating raft. The idea is to work on his balance and build up his trunk muscles. Well, we were doing this the other day and it was going so well that I pushed us out to the deep end of the pool (which is maybe 5.5 feet). What I didn't really take into consideration was the ball floating nearby. When Bennett saw it, he launched himself overboard! He went right under and I was terrified that he would sink to the bottom like a stone and I wouldn't be able to get to him quick enough. Let me tell you - his arms and legs were both moving and so were mine as I rushed to grab him. He was probably under for less than 5 seconds but it seemed like forever to me - everything moved in slow motion. He sputtered a bit when I pulled him out and was more insulted than anything else I think.

I'm just glad daddy wasn't there or else there would have been a very large man diving into the water with his work boots on to rescue his boy.

You're making me very glad that I have lifeguard training. Charlie loves the bath and I can't wait for the chance to take him to the pool!

'Sink or Swim'

You both did extremely well considering the circumstances. Barbara, you held your head and did what had to be done. Good job mommy.

Amazing how quickly Bennett focused on the ball - and of course he thought it was 'play time'. Just like crawling - if you take your eyes off him for a minute - now you see him now you don't. He is just that fast in his actions.

Next week will bring a new day at the pool and Bennett (hopefully) will have forgotten 'this weeks swimming lesson' ... or he might go back trying to find that ball.
He has such a good memory!

Thanks for sharing and thanks for keeping your wits about you. Everything worked out OK. I am a 'non swimmer' so I am admire your courage.

Love and Prayers

Hi Bennett,
grandma and grandma can hardly wait to go camping with you and your mommy and daddy. We are going to have a ball down at the beach at Grundy Lake PP. & at Chutes PP. We have to get you a life preserver so you can come with grandma when she goes out in the canoe. Then, when you are older I'll take you fishing. Ohhhhh the fun we will have.
Don't let the "dunking" discourage you. I'm sure that mommy didn't do it on purpose. Lol. In another year or so we will take you for swimming lessons. Your mommy went 2 years in a row but really learned to swim at the provincial park and we would have to threaten her with dire consequences if she didn't come out of the water. In the meantime, Bennett, remember to move your arms and feet if mommy tosses you in the water again and HOLD YOUR BREATH.
Lots of love, kisses and hugs
