Extremes

So, let’s just get something straight. I’m pretty much your typical Canadian. I’m polite, hold doors open, apologize way too often and use the word (yes it’s a word) “eh” more often than I would care to admit. Another typical Canadian trait I have is my obsession with the weather – I love to talk about it and I love to complain about it. It’s rare to find a Canadian that is completely satisfied with the weather on any given day. It’s often too hot, too cold, too much snow, not enough snow, etc. We live in a country of extremes – and it can sometimes cause you to do things that other people (non-Canadians) might think are crazy. Things like wearing shorts in a snowstorm or shoveling in a t-shirt.

However, this post isn’t really about the weather. Well maybe a bit. Since my last “Snow Day” post we have had two more major snowstorms. It hasn’t escaped my attention that winter hasn’t even started yet. That alone is surprising as these days it seems that most things escape my attention. It leaves me shaking in my Sorel snow boots to think of what might happen when winter really starts. But once again in typical Canadian fashion, I’m getting thrown off topic by my distraction with the weather.

This morning I was getting Bennett ready to go to daycare. I layered him in thermal underwear, lined wind pants and a fleece sweater. Next, were boots, coat, hat and mitts. I didn’t bother with snow pants as he has a pair at daycare already. By the time I was done I was sweating and cursing winter under my breath. I was so hot that I was seriously considering stripping and throwing myself into the snow pile in my front yard to make naked snow angels. The only things preventing this from happening is that we were already running late and my father was standing there waiting for me.

As I started to layer on my own clothing I was thinking of how it could be worse. I started thinking of a couple years from now, getting Bennett ready to go out in the snow and how just as I snap the last button into place, he’ll look up at me with those beautiful blue eyes and say, “Mommy, I have to pee.”

Ahhh…winter.

Hi Barbara,
your post gave me a good laugh!
It got me thinking of that saying
"what goes around, comes around".
You described perfectly everything I had to do to get you ready to go outside. It always seemed to take forever, and of course, just as I got done getting you dressed, you would announce that you had to go pee. All that AFTER I asked you if you had to pee before you got dressed. Your answer was always NO! AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH.

I HATE LISTENING TO PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WEATHER!!! Your dad is a good example. I swear that he takes it personally, as if the weather god was out to get him.
I don't often complain about our weather because there isn't a hell of a lot I can do to change it, so I might as well deal with it.
In the winter I stay indoors and in the summer I stay were there is air-conditioning. THAT is how I handle the weather.
Did I mention I HATE THE COLD???
Lots of love, hugs and kisses Mother (aka Mikey...Grandma)

Hi Barbara,
I'm Mel and I am the mom of Piper, she's also a right hemi. Our kids' stories sound very similar (I didn't subject her to my singing terrible either, our OT asked at the first visit :) ) I'd love to compare notes some time. You can visit us at fraasefamily.blogspot.com

We're from ND - as close to Canada as it gets! and tired of snow...

Barbara, you always seem to hit the 'nail right on the head'!

Weather (these days anyway), Humbug!

'Mommy, I have to pe' - a phrase heard only too often and that is why we (as adults) always make a last minute 'pit stop' before we leave the house.

Oh yes, with age (hopefully) comes wisdom.

We do learn so many things as we get older and with experience!

Cherish these moments because before you know it they are gone.

... We have but today to live and enjoy ... we only pass this way but once.

Love and prayers for continued eventful days with your loved ones!

God Bless!

Hi Barbara. I smiled when I read your e-mail. Yes, we have had way too much snow! Getting kids ready to go out in winter - what a joy eh? I'm sure the neighbours would have loved to see your naked snow angel.

How are the plans for the BD bash for Bennett on the 14th? Sorry I have to miss it. I'm singing at Constable Laurie Hawkins funeral on Saturday. Such a tragedy for that family. That kind of heart ache puts the things we put up with into perspective, I suppose. By the way, I did find a wonderful toy store with GREAT bath toys - beside the A & W on Lasalle. I loved that store. I hope to go in there some day when I have time to actually play!

Take good care - and much love to you, Jim, and Bennett.

Hi! Funny, but "Anonymous" sounds incredibly like your mother. :)

This post is SO true. Until I had kids, I thought winter was the best season, I'm not one for heat. But life is so much easier when you don't have to spend 10 minutes getting ready to go out. And, we can't seem to keep a single pair of mittens intact in this house!

Still, looking forward to getting some snow one of the years, we're near New York and don't get the storms like we used to. Watch, now I just jinxed us, we'll be getting one guaranteed on the day we're supposed to take off to Florida for vacation.

No matter the weather, the "I gotta go..." wail can happen at the most inopportune moments. Welcome to parenting!

I'm pretty sure saying "no matter the weather" to a Canadian is like saying the salsa was made in New York to a Texan. Just. Shouldn't. Sorry.

What a good tale you tell! Really - you should consider writing a book - I'd be the first to read it.
I just spoke to Sue this morning and she told me Bennett walked accross the living room yesterday without his brace on. Go Buddy, go!
I am so thrilled.

Can't wait to see him on Sunday.

This post was great! I loved your description of Canadians! We Minnesotans have a lot of the similar traits!

I love your picture of the future! I can see that happening :)
