Have any of you heard about the controversy surrounding this new movie that's coming out soon? It's called Tropic Thunder and stars Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Tom Cruise. You can read more about it here and here - and then come back please.
I'll admit that I don't know much about this movie. Obviously, I haven't seen it and I have no intention of doing so. It sounds disgusting and offensive. I wish the protesters all the luck in the world and hope no one goes to see it.
I'll also admit that I don't believe in censorship. I'm a supporter of free speech and support the rights of artists to express themselves. I don't think it's appropriate to ban books. I think it should be up to the individual to make up their own mind.
So, what's my point and why am I even bringing this up? As usual, I'm not really sure. This movie sounds awful and I would like for it to go away. I think it will encourage negative stereotypes and illustrate all too well that for some inexplicable reason it is ok to make fun of people who are vulnerable.
I guess what I just don't understand is why movies like this are even made. Who thinks this kind of stuff is funny? Obviously there are a lot of people out there who think it's hilarious to make fun of people with disabilities. Why else would they spend more than $90 million on this film?
I can think of many better ways to spend $90 million dollars. I can also think of many other things to laugh about.

Hmm...definitely won't be seeing it. Sadly though, 10 years ago I might have. I guess I've done much growing up over the years and that stuff just doesn't excite me. But as long as people keep paying to see this crap Hollywood will keep making them.
We will definately NOT be seeing it.
Ben Stiller is a comic who comes from a good family and knows 'right from wrong'. This is wrong.
There is no fun in being rude and crude at someone elses expense.
Ben is recently married and has a young child. We don't suppose that actors and film makers think down the road to when their children will be living, watching and questioning 'what daddy did' then maybe they wouldn't do it.
Where are our principles?
Everyone is responsible for their actions. All we can do is show our displeasure by our reaction.
His co-stars know the humiliation of being pounded by the press. How many times for Robert Downey Jr. (drugs, divorce, and alcohol) Nick Nolte (drugs and alcohol) Tom Cruise (sexual preference - what can we say)? Sciencology seems to be the answer for him!
We, too, are not in favour of censorship and we are not here to judge BUT we must make informed decisions about our lives.
Holding these people up as role models is a no-no.
Just think of what good the money ($90. million) spent on the making of this film could have done.
Then maybe the whole world could be laughing at something worthwhile - maybe a miracle drug or cure? What a wonderful world we could live in.

Oh God...I hadn't even heard about the movie. Admittedly, I'm not really up on my Hollywood news.
I find it ridiculous that the movie executives are claiming that the movie "doesn't aim to make fun of the disabled, but of the actors that try to further their careers by playing those roles". Does anyone really believe that the audience that would actually go to this movie would come away with that idea? Or would they leave thinking that using the R word is not only acceptable, but funny?
Shame on everyone associated with such garbage. Ben Stiller used to be one of my favourite actors......

I agree with everyone. How on earth can anyone think that something like that is funny???
I don't often go to movies, but when it is released in DVD form, you can be darned sure that we WILL NOT be renting it.

We did not want to come across with a 'holier then thou' attitude because ... strangely enough, as Dawn said, 10 years ago, we too might have (and probably did)watched all kinds of crap on TV (because we don't and won't go to movies).
We know that we have and are continuing to grow in a positive mature way.
Amazing what the birth of 'one-baby-boy' has done to us and for us.
Bennett, you have made our world a much better place to 'grow up' and live in.
We are never too old to learn.

I'm disgusted they even considered making a movie like this - in fact I heard a lady on a national breakfast talk show bragging about it this morning! They are portraying it's okay to make fun of people with disabilities - what is this teaching the viewers? No wonder people at school use it towards me so casually. Ugh, some things. I swear.
